Henry Thomas Hartwell was born in Groton,Massachusetts May 3,1832, the first child of Amasa and Mary Hartwell.At the age of 21 he lost a leg in an accident at a box factory.In consequence,he sought to improve his education,entering Bridgewater Normal School teachers college(Bridgewater,Ma.) in 1858 and remaining two years.He taught for seven years and eventually became principal of the Colored Normal School in Baltimore,Maryland.Henry and family later returned to the Boston area,where he worked as a clerk.He also was engaged in business as a silverplater with the firm of J.N. Lindsey & Co. of Boston.Henry married Elizabeth Beede Oct.12,1875.She was from Amesbury,Ma.,and was a Quaker.They had two children-Harry Linwood,b.1866,and Arthur Elmer,b.1871.Elizabeth Beede died in Newton Highlands,Ma. Nov.4,1894.Henry Thomas died in Boston,Nov.3,1898.
