George Hartwell, my great-great grandfather, was born May 7, 1833 at Groton, Massachusetts, the second child of Amasa and Mary (Patch) Hartwell.He married Mary J.Dow of Amherst,New Hampshire Feb.10,1858.(she was born June 10,1839,and died Sept.30,1895.) George and Mary Dow had four children-
1.Annabelle [b.sept.10,1860,d.dec.16,1860]
2.Ellen May born July1,1862 at Amherst, NH. died July 31,1929 at Pembroke, NH. married 27 December 1884,Fred Bill(son of Samuel D and Susan Pratt Knight Bill) b.Dec.27,1859 at Gilsum,NH. d. 19 September 1953 at Concord,NH.Both are buried at Keene, NH.
3.George Herbert b.Sept.19,1865, d. Aug.19,1939 m. 9 May 1889, Inez C., dau.of Sylvanus and Clarinda(Langdell) Hutchinson, b. Oct.23,1868, d.June 16,1943. no ch.
4.Albert Amasa (My great grandfather)[b.Nov.6,1870,d.April 10,1917]

George and Mary Hartwell lived on Chestnut Hill road in Amherst, N.H. In May 1861 he enlisted in Co.B,eighth N.H. volunteers and served in the Dept. of the Gulf.He was a veteran of twelve battles,including the seige of Port Hudson Louisiana.He was discharged,disabled,June 12,1864 and lived in Milford and Wilton,N,H.,working as a painter.He removed to Nashua in 1874 and was employed at Gregg and Son Sash and Blind Co.In 1876 he removed to Marlow,New Hampshire where he owned a farm.George died at Keene,N.H. Dec.17,1906. Mary and George are buried at Wilton,NH.
