Albert Amasa Hartwell was born Dec.12 1841 at Groton,Massachusetts,the youngest child of Amasa and Mary Hartwell.Albert was a shoemaker by trade.He enlisted May 1,1861 in Co.B, 5th Massachusetts volunteers,and was at first battle Bull Run.He re-enlisted Aug.8,1864, E. Co. 1st Batt. Art.,and stationed at Fort Warren military prison on George's Island in Boston Harbor.(Confederate President Jefferson Davis was a prisoner at Fort Warren during that time).Albert married Isabella Francena Wardwell (b.April 17,1845)on April 16,1862.They had two children-Addie Isabella, born Sept.6,1862 ,and Francena H.,born March 6,1864.Isabella Francena died shortly after giving birth to their second child.

On Nov.26,1872,Albert married his second wife,Helen F. Cummings of Reading,Ma.,(b.March 15,1850 ,d.Feb.29,1916).They had one child-Leon A.,b.Feb.6,1880.Albert died at Beverly,Ma. Jan.25,1914.
